2008 Notes

Early Season notes:

2008 Season is around the corner....

Farmer Rich has been busy at the farm during these winter months, getting ready for the 2008 season. As the cold came early, field work was impossible so he has been concentrating on the greenhouses. We have 4 greenhouses in all, 1 heated.onion plants The heated greenhouse needed a little work to get it ready to turn the heat on, so Farmer Rich replaced the plastic and the baseboards to improve its integrity to retain the heat. What was supposed to be a few hour project, turned into a 2 days! But it is complete and the greenhouse is already full of onion plants. He started bunching onions, Walla Walla’s, Red onions & Texas Sweet onions. These will be moved into the cold greenhouse in February to make room to starting the field crop plants such as tomatoes!

new benches

Since little field work could be completed, he started reconfiguring greenhouse #4 to make it more functional. Configuring a new bench layout and weed blocking on both upper greenhouses is the current project.

ripped plastic

Greenhouse #1 suffered from a harsh windy snow storm, ripping the plastic in some places. The plastic has been on for 8 years now (it usually lasts only 4 years). He will be replacing it once the snow has melted.

The seed order is finally complete and we have ordered from Fedco Seed, Johnny’s, Jordan, Totally Tomatoes, Territorial, Evergreen and Seed Savers Exchange. We wish to thank our Hoboken Midtown CSF members for their gift certificate to Fedco Seed given to us at the annual Pot Luck dinner. This helps out immensely as our seed budget is now well over 4 figures!
