2011 Season Notes 2010 season notes
  • A NEW greenhouse was built in 2010. This allowed us to expand our transplant production and plant crops in fixed beds once the season start.
  • We continue to rent a greenhouse in Franklin and this extra space was utilized for greens production as well as the Texas Super Sweet Onions that were delivered early in the season.
  • The fields we re-worked in 2009 allowed for additional planting area. We moved partially into the 20th century by utilizing our large tractor. Ongoing projects have included recovering some of our greenhouse and starting to prepare the fields.
  • Seeds –Many of our CSF members contributed to a gift certificate for Seed purchases at the end-of-season Pot Luck dinner last year and this was greatly appreciated.  Our 2010 seed order is complete and we look forward to many new varieties this year. This will be our third year offering the Ramapo Tomato (heritage hybrid) from seed received from Rutgers University. They have decided to reintroduce this variety in commercial quantity and we will again be getting some seed. This variety was known as the “true Jersey tomato” 30 years ago. A lot has been mentioned about heirloom tomato varieties, but there are also some excellent hybrid varieties that have gone by the wayside. The Ramapo tomato is an early variety and will appear in your deliveries.  We also plan on growing the re-introduced Moreton variety.  Delicious Heirloom Tomatoes are delivered in the summer.

  • 2010 Events include our spring Annual Heirloom Tomato Transplant Sales in Ramsey & Lafayette, NY. In the summer we hold our Annual Heirloom Tomato Tastings at the Hoboken Historical Museum in August a Garlic Day in Hoboken as well.
  • Usually, your weekly delivery will include a “Herb-of-the-week” and at times you may receive some unusual vegetables such as ornamental edibles. You have to like to cook and enjoy being surprised!!!
  •  During the 2010 season we will continue to provide fruit deliveries which have been very popular with the members. The fruit deliveries usually start in mid-July. The fruit is from Windy Brow Farm located in Newton, NJ.
  • 3-Seasons of Garlic! Spring time starts the garlic year with deliveries of green garlic. Early in the summer is time for garlic curls, just right for adding to your favorite dishes. Late summer and into the autumn is the time for the traditional garlic bulbs to be delivered. Over 30 different varieties of garlic were planted with some friends of Catalpa as well as some CSF member participation at the farm in October 2009 and these varieties will be harvested in July for deliveries in 2010.
  • Each week you'll receive an e-mail with our weekly newsletter & recipes. They are also available on our web blog: www.catalparidge.blogspot.com
